Preganglionic sympathetic activity and the effects of anaesthetics.

چکیده
Preganglionic cervical and splanchnic sympathetic activity was recorded before and during administration of inhalation anaesthetics, in rabbits ventilated with oxygen and given gallamine. During control periods, when light anaesthesia was maintained with pentobarbitone, sympathetic discharge responded to changes in arterial pressure. Increased arterial Pco3 exaggerated the amplitude of the respiratory sympathetic rhythm, and had a more variable effect on the mean impulse discharge rate. Preganglionic activity was increased by 25—50 per cent cyclopropane, which usually raised arterial pressure; by halothane, which caused severe hypotension; and by diethyl ether, which produced smaller circulatory changes. These experiments question the concept of "central vasomotor depression" during inhalation anaesthesia in the rabbit.

Effects of carotid chemoreceptor and baroreceptor stimulation upon the sympathetic preganglionic and postganglionic cardiac nerve and single fiber activity in cats.
The stimulation of arterial baroreceptors (blind sack technique) inhibited the preganglionic and postganglionic cardiac sympathetic activity. There were found three populations of single sympathetic preganglionic fibers (Th3) responding in a different way to the stimulation of arterial baroreceptors and arterial chemoreceptors (infusion of the small volume of saline bubbled with CO2 into the ca...
متن کاملSpinal sympathetic interneurons: their identification and roles after spinal cord injury.
Primary afferent neurons rarely, if ever, synapse on the sympathetic preganglionic neurons that regulate the cardiovascular system, nor do sympathetic preganglionic neurons normally exhibit spontaneous activity in the absence of excitatory inputs. Therefore, after serious spinal cord injury "spinal sympathetic interneurons" provide the sole excitatory and inhibitory inputs to sympathetic pregan...
متن کاملMelanocortin 4 Receptors Reciprocally Regulate Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Preganglionic Neurons
Melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4Rs) in the central nervous system are key regulators of energy and glucose homeostasis. Notably, obese patients with MC4R mutations are hyperinsulinemic and resistant to obesity-induced hypertension. Although these effects are probably dependent upon the activity of the autonomic nervous system, the cellular effects of MC4Rs on parasympathetic and sympathetic neuron...
متن کاملA NEW BIOLOGICAL SCREENING SYSTEM FOR LOCAL ANAESTHETICS BY INHIBITION MOBILITY OF TETRAHYMENA PYRIFORMIS
An alternative in vitro approach to drug screening has been the use of human cell cultures for antiviral agents and microbial cell cultures for the assessment of the carcinogenic potential of selected compounds. A number of protozoan species have been also used as drug screens for anti-protozoal agents. The ciliated protozoan Tetrahymena pyriformis species has been widely utilised as a dru...
متن کاملA Null Mutation for the 3 Nicotinic Acetylcholine (ACh) Receptor Gene Abolishes Fast Synaptic Activity in Sympathetic Ganglia and Reveals That ACh Output from Developing Preganglionic Terminals Is Regulated in an Activity-Dependent Retrograde Manner
In vertebrates, synaptic activity exerts an important influence on the formation of neural circuits, yet our understanding of its role in directing presynaptic and postsynaptic differentiation during synaptogenesis is incomplete. This study investigates how activity influences synaptic differentiation as synapses mature during early postnatal life. Specifically, we ask what happens to presynapt...
